ust a few miles south of the famed and historic Santa Fe Plaza lies a notable geographic basin that was a cradle of civilization several hundreds of years ago. The Galisteo Basin has a rich history as a trade center due to it's location between the upper Rio Grande Valley and the eastern plains. During the 14th and 15th centuries several groups of Pueblo native Americans inhabited the area until suddenly leaving the area in 1680. This was likely the result of the persistent efforts by the Spanish to retake Santa Fe and the area. The basin is home to numerous significant archeological sites, some discovered and others not.
